Why I didn’t build a list in the copywriting/marketing space

Yesterday I mentioned how a while back, I followed Travis Speegle’s MyPeeps program to build up a new email list of dog owners via paid ads. To which a long-time reader wrote in to ask:

Just curious, John, how come you didn’t build a list in the copywriting/marketing space? I’m using a different process myself that will help me build a list with a combo of content + paid ads so curious to hear how come you don’t try to grow your existing list.

Good question.

First off, I frankly don’t want to build a “copywriting” list.

I haven’t primarily been writing about copywriting for, I don’t know, the past two+ years, ever since I stopped working with copywriting clients, and maybe before then.

I have been writing about persuasion and influence and psychology on the one hand, and online businesses and marketing on the other hand, and random other stuff that I find funny or interesting on the third hand.

But the real question is why not build up this existing list, and why start a new list instead?

I thought about it. I came up with a few reasons, ranked here from most logical and therefore least likely to be true, to least logical and therefore most likely to be true:

#1. I wanted to do a demonstration for the people inside the implementation group I ran when I first promoted MyPeeps. I didn’t want people who were building up their own lists to throw up their arms and say, “Of course you can do it because you have all these assets I don’t have!” A new list would make the demonstration cleaner and more persuasive.

#2. I was genuinely thinking to do this dog list as a side business of its own (I still think it could be viable). The list building implementation group I ran seemed like a good moment to kick that off.

#3. My simple opportunity-seeking mindset, which lives at the core of my person, and which says it’s more exciting to start something new and risky than to toil away on something familiar and proven.

#4. Because it’s simpler to run ads for a new, impersonal list than an existing, personal list. About that:

Like I said, I ran a 4-week implementation group for the people who bought MyPeeps when I promoted it as an affiliate.

In that group, I could see people running ads to build up their own personal lists.

AND IT DID NOT WORK.

Not because paid ads are a scam, or because Travis Speegle’s MyPeeps course doesn’t deliver.

Travis lays out very simple and yet very proven process to make paid ads work for list building, whether it’s your own personal list or an anonymous list of dog owners.

The reason it didn’t work for many people is because they refused to follow a crucial step in Travis’s process.

In fact, even when I pointed out to people they were skipping this crucial step, they nodded at me, smiled in appreciation of my looking out for them, and then turned around and continued to do exactly what they had been doing, which was skipping this crucial step.

What is this step?

My advice on actually building an email list

The diligent reader above is absolutely right. Daily Email Habit is about emailing your existing list.

List building is not my forte or my focus, and therefore I don’t sell a course on it.

But last year, I did promote Travis Speegle’s MyPeeps course, all about how to build a large, engaged email list.

I bought Travis’s course myself before promoting it. I thought the content was great. I ended up promoting it to my list and even running an “implementation group” on the back of it over 4 weeks.

My Royalty Ronin money breakdown

In my experience, if you promote a new offer diligently for a few days, questions start to arrive from the heavens that make the promo easier and more effective.

For example, the following bit of manna landed in my inbox yesterday:

May I ask — aside from affiliate fees — how did this membership make you money?

The background is that I’ve been doing an affiliate promotion for Travis Sago’s Royalty Ronin for the past few days.

The first day of the promo, I recorded a video and actually talked inside that about money that being inside Ronin myself has made me over the past year.

But I understand not everyone will have watched that video. So lemme give you the gist.

I directly attribute about $60k of income over the past year to being inside Royalty Ronin. That breaks out like this:

#1. Last autumn, I ran two two-day promos — the White Monday campaign for Copy Riddles, and the Shangri-La event for Most Valuable Email.

The core idea for both of those promos came from Travis’s teachings that come as bonuses for being inside Royalty Ronin — specifically, an idea he shares in his Millionaire Math training (inside his Phoneless Sales Machine program).

In total, those two promos made me a little over $30k.

#2. Last summer, I started going through Travis’s Passive Cash Flow Mojo course (another course that used to cost a few thousand dollars, but is now free as a bonus if you sign up to Royalty Ronin).

I went through PCFM a couple of times and followed it pretty much to the “T” (short for Travis) when coming up with the idea for, launching, and then marketing my Daily Email Habit offer.

I haven’t checked the numbers this month yet, but that offer has definitely made me over $25k in the few months it’s been running.

#3. Via lurking in Travis’s Royalty Ronin Skool community, I got clued into an under-the-radar media buyer named Travis Speegle, who is also inside Ronin and is also a Travis Sago acolyte.

Travis Speegle has a course on media buying for growing your email list called MyPeeps, which at some point was being promoted in Ronin.

I bought MyPeeps, went through it, saw it was a great course.

I then reached out to Travis (Speegle) via DM on Skool and proposed I promote his course to my list. He agreed. We did the promo last September.

The result was about $25k in sales, and my cut was somewhere between $10k and $12k (it wasn’t an even 50%, because Travis created the course with Ryan Lee, and I guess has to pay out Ryan some residuals for each new sale).

Add all up all three of the above — and you get over $60k I attribute directly either to ideas I got from Travis, or through being inside the Royalty Ronin community, however mole-like my behavior there might be.

Would I have made some of this money in other ways had I not been in Travis’s world?

Sure. But there’s no doubt in my mind that I have made much more as a result of being in Travis’s Royalty Ronin, and of having gone through his courses — some several times — than the amounts I’ve paid Travis for that access. In fact, I’ve made many times more. Probably 10x, if not 20x.

And that’s why I keep promoting Royalty Ronin to my list.

In fact, that’s why I promoted it to my list last year as well, even before there was an affiliate program — when I had no self-interest in promoting it, other than being the first to clue in my readers to a valuable resource.

And now for your money breakdown, or the lack of it:

Over the past year, I paid Travis Sago $3k for access to Ronin and the associated high-ticket courses. A few weeks ago, I paid him another $1k to renew my access for another year, early.

You, on the other hand, don’t have to make any such dramatic leap. That’s because of two changes that Travis introduced recently to how he charges for access to Royalty Ronin.

The first change is that Travis has started offering the option to sign up to Ronin monthly for $300, instead of yearly for $3k.

$300 is still very expensive if you don’t do anything with the info, or the connections, or with the inspiration available inside Ronin.

Why I shouldn’t be allowed near a toaster

A couple days ago, I started promoting a free trial of a Skool group as an affiliate… or so I thought.

At first, I figured Skool doesn’t let me see who had signed up via my affiliate link, since it’s a free-trial offer.

It turns out Skool is happy to show me this information. The problem was that I didn’t use the affiliate link when linking to this offer. Instead, I used the bare link.

Strike one.

A few days before that, I wrote an email and scheduled it for my usual sending time between 8 and 9 o’clock.

Except it only turned out the next morning, after several dedicated readers wrote to ask me where my email is, that I realized I had scheduled my email for the wrong day, and for “am” instead of the usual “pm.”

Strike two.

A few days before that, I did a list swap with Jason Resnick.

I gave Jason a link for the lead magnet I was offering… and then a day later, I airheadedly used the same URL, as a redirect on my site, to link to Jason’s landing page from my own email.

If that URL chicanery doesn’t make any sense to you, don’t worry. It takes a special kind of genius to understand.

The end result of all that genius was that a bunch of Jason’s readers, who clicked on the link in Jason’s email in order to get my lead magnet, were redirected to Jason’s optin page instead.

That meant that not only did I miss out on a bunch of new subscribers, but I created a hassle and a headache for my JV partner.

Strike three.

The honest-to-woodheadedness truth is that I really should not be allowed anywhere near a computer, smart TV, or toaster.

Because if there’s a chance to harebrain some setting, to forget to push some button or to push the wrong button that shouldn’t be pushed, and to cause the toast to burn as a result, then I am sure to find that button.

And yet, I keep living. In fact, I keep living quite well. Which brings me to an idea I’d like to share with you.

That idea is the Casino of Life.

Unlike in a normal casino, when you play inside the Casino of Life, you don’t need to have a winning hand to win.

Because in the Casino of Life, you can walk around all the tables, see which hands other people have, and you can bet on their hands. And not only that.

I still think so.

It’s also about steady exposure to Travis’s brain-shifting insights and inspiration, like the Casino of Life idea, which have made all the difference for me at the right moments.

3 takeaways from my long-gone MyPEEPS promo

For much of this month I’ve been promoting Travis Speegle’s MyPEEPS course as an affiliate. My promo finished two days ago in a flurry of emails that left me in a kind of mental blackout.

As a result, yesterday I ended up writing an email that made zero reference to the promo.

Today though, I sat down and made a list of 10 takeaways for myself from this promo. I want to share three that might be of interest to you:

#1. Who bought?

I sat down and looked at the people who ended up taking me up on this offer. Most of them fell into one of the following categories:

– People who sell others info about how they sell others info (no hate, I count myself among this group)

– Copywriters with niche lists outside copywriting

– Service providers looking for a fountain of steady clients

– People with existing businesses who are getting leads in some other way but want more/steadier/easier

– Service providers looking to package up knowledge into an offer that they can sell to a list

I’m sharing this list because it might be interesting if what you do is similar to what I do.

Or maybe this list can simply remind you that it’s a good idea to sit down and look over people who are buying from you, and see what they have in common.

It’s eye-opening, and it can help with your positioning, your offers, and your lead gen.

#2. Ac-cent-tchu-ate the negative and forget about the positive

It’s a well-worn fact that human brains love to focus on the negative and largely ignore the positive. That’s why typical copywriting advice is to dig in on the pain.

But copy advice is not what I have in mind here.

Instead, I want to show you how this “ac-cent-tchu-ate the negative” stuff applies to me as well.

At one point last week, I sent out an email asking people their objections to buying.

Fine. I got some useful info in response to that email, and it probably helped me drive in a few more sales.

But at the same time, I forgot to do something much much more important.

And that’s to follow up with people who were buying, and ask them, why? What really did it? What was the main thing that got them?

Because it’s much better to focus on the white hot core of the star of desire… than to collect motes of interest, far away, in cold outer space.

#3. Improvisation is inadequate

Yes, it’s a good idea to test out new approaches to things. But testing needs to be done against a core of what’s known and proven. Otherwise, odds are good you descend into chaos. Free jazz… and frankly I hate free jazz.

More specifically, it’s smart to follow a proven format for your promo structure, your offer, your bonuses.

This also applies to copy angles — before, during, and after the promo.

In fact, that’s why I’m writing this post-promo email, highlighting lessons learned, even now, two days after the promo ended.

Because I’ve noticed repeatedly that this is the type of email I always make time for, following email promos by other people with online businesses.

I imagine it’s interesting and valuable for my audience also. Not just because I share takeaways from personal experience… but because this kind of email wraps up an intense period of promotion, and puts a kind of cap on it.

So there you go. Three takeaways from almost two weeks of emailing.

Who wins the fight: Viral posts or paid traffic?

I’ll tell ya, or actually, I’ll defer to a person with more authority on the matter:

Russell Nohelty.

As I wrote once last week, Russell is a bestselling author of fantasy books and comics. He also writes about the business of writing, and he runs Writer MBA, a membership program to help writers make more money.

Over the past 6 months, Russell spent $30k on paid ads to beef up his email list, which now stands at over 70,000 subscribers.

Russell and I did a call last Monday about his experiences spending all that money on ads.

On the call, Russell said something interesting — that advertising democratizes virality. Says Russell, advertising allows people who were not “blessed by the magic audience fairy” to build an audience for their work.

Sounds great, right?

Except… do you really wanna go viral? Here’s another thing that Russell said:

I have never heard somebody say, “I went viral and got all the best people subscribing to me!”

It’s always some version of “Wow, lots of bigots in the comments who hate everything about me.”

If you are attracting the wrong crowd organically, you could end up in a way worse place than running ads. I know because I’ve been there.

Both are bad and both are good. The difference is the quality of the traffic source, how you nurture the leads you generate, and whether you are paying in time or money.

This isn’t about trumpeting paid traffic over organic traffic, or vice versa. The point is simply this:

Where you get your subscribers matters… how you get them matters… what you promise them matters… how you treat them when they’re on your list matters.

This is not any kind of inspirational woo-woo, but very practical dollars-and-cents calculus, borne out by sales, spam complaints, and the number of interesting or annoying reader replies.

And this is one of the reasons why I liked Travis Speegle’s paid list-building approach, the one he teaches in his MyPEEPS course, which I’ve been promoting all week long.

Travis’s system is not about paying to inflate your subscriber count with people who hate you or never want to hear from you. It’s also not about getting the cheapest traffic simply because it’s cheap.

Instead, Travis’s approach is about building a quality list, with paid ads, sustainably, with the goal of having a valuable relationship with the people on that list for the long term. That in fact is why the course is called MyPEEPS, and not “8-Figure A-List Media-Buying Secrets.”

How to stop being seen as a milquetoast

Point being:

You might know that followup can get the attention of those who forgot about you or never even noticed you.

You might also know followup can build more desire.

But I imagine you never thought of followup as a kind of proof element.

And yet it is. Because who follows up?

People who believe in what they are doing and selling, including themselves.

The milquetoasts drop away.

So send regular emails, preferably daily… and if you got a deadline coming up, send a bunch.

You’ll catch people’s attention… you’ll remind them of what they want and how you can help… and you will convince them you have something worthwhile, just because you keep following up about it. Is there anything earthbreaking here?

Comes a question about my ongoing MyPEEPS promotion, which ends tomorrow night:

I know you’re selling this course as an affiliate offer.

I’m wondering if you actually learned anything new in the course or was it just a suite of fundamentals.

I’m asking because I’ve taken a number of courses in Ad buying, and most say much the same thing.

There are nuances in approaches… occasionally there’s a course that has an epiphany – something truly earthbreaking. Something that makes you go “wow…. Aha!” For me, ad temperature levels when I first heard it was interesting. I also appreciated TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU links on campaigns that I learned in another course. MintCRO’s approach for deconstructing Ads to landers was interesting – engineered, but interesting.

I’m asking you because I’ve feel you’re earnest in your emails.

I am indeed earnest in my emails, to the point of often telling people not to buy offers that I’m promoting.

Which is what’s gonna happen here.

Because rather than, “Is there anything new here,” I think there are better questions to ask first.

Such as, how is your list doing? How many people sign up on average every day? Is that enough? If not, how are you planning to grow it in the future? And how confident are you that it will work out?

If you are happy with how things are and where they are going, great.

In that case, I would say there’s no sense in taking me up on this offer, whether or not it has anything new in it. Go attack some more promising opportunity instead, or just take the afternoon off.

I haven’t been through a lot of courses on ad buying, so things that are new to me might not be new to you.

If you must have something new, two things come to mind right now.

It was an “aha” to me — a new perspective I hadn’t really seen before, in spite of 10+ years of various copy and marketing books and courses.

I can imagine this simple “aha” can make all the difference in coming up with ad campaigns that work as opposed to ones that flop, and that won’t unflop, even with all the sexy tweaks and tactics that you might want to pay thousands of dollars for.

The other “new” thing for me came at the end of MyPEEPS. It was Travis’s “Reverse Course” method. I had never heard of this method before, nor even considered it. And yet:

3-step plan to create “Electrical Socket Offers” out of thin air

Last week I did a presentation inside Thom Benny’s Copyjitsu coaching group. Thom coaches 6 guys, all with good copy chops already, and he invited me, John Bejakovic, to come and pontificate on how to write emails.

One of the guys in Thom’s group asked me the following:

I have this thing where I’m writing daily emails. I’m getting in reps. I wouldn’t be writing all this stuff if I didn’t believe I could help somebody.

But also, I don’t have any sales pages or digital products. All this that I’m offering, every day, is still consulting.

Do you have any way to think about that, when you’re at that stage, don’t have digital products, but you’re just pitching consulting?

This is a great question. I bring it up now because earlier today, I asked what objections people had to buying MyPEEPS, a course I’m promoting until Sunday, on building up your email list with paid traffic.

Along with the usual objections — don’t need it, can’t afford it, already bought it — I got some surprises. For example, a few people wrote to say, “What can I do with an email list when I ain’t got no offers!”

So let me address that now.

If you got no offers, you can always decide to offer… consulting.

That’s Step 1 of my “Electrical Socket Offers” plan.

The problem is, “consulting” is a horrible, horrible offer. I say that without restraint because I’ve been guilty of offering “consulting” myself. I’ve also been guilty of making other horrible offers, like “coaching,” or “copywriting services.”

These offers are all horrible because they put the burden on the prospect. They say, “How am I supposed to know what I can help you with? I do have some knowledge and skill… but you tell me how you can use them.”

So Step 2 of my “Electrical Socket Offers” plan is to take the burden off the shoulders of your prospects.

You take the burden off by figuring out what problems your prospects have.

This is much easier to do than you might think. You simply ask. You can do it by digging around online. You can do it via email. Or, if you have the stomach for it, you can even do it over the phone.

Ask your prospects where they’re at… where they hope to go… what’s keeping them from getting there. Do this a few times, until you find a specific problem you can actually suggest a solution to.

BLAM!!

Suddenly, you’ve taken your horrible, horrible “consulting” offer, and you’ve transformed it into something wonderful and valuable — a solution to a specific problem that your prospects have.

Because really, when my laptop is running out of battery, I look for an electrical socket.

Once I find an electrical socket, I don’t stop and ask, “What manner of electricity does this socket supply? Was it electricity generated by a windmill? A hydroelectric dam? Solar?”

I really don’t care. I just want my laptop charged. Any socket I can plug into will do.

Same thing with people and their problems. People don’t care if you solve their problem via a digital course, consulting, or even a done-for-you service. Really, what they are after is a solution to their specific problem. They’re looking for a socket to plug into.

Step 3 of my plan is optional but highly valuable.

It’s to give your consulting offer a name, such as, for example, “Electrical Socket Offers.”

Because there is magic in giving things a name. It relieves any remaining burden on your prospects, and gives them just a simple, light word or three to hold in their mind.

So that’s the 3-step plan to create “Electric Socket Offers” out of thin air.

I imagine few people will take the above advice seriously.

I imagine even fewer will actually choose to implement it.
