Mickey Mouse promos for Mickey Mouse reasons

Today, being November 18, is the birthday of Mickey Mouse. I bet you weren’t expecting that?

Mickey made his first public appearance in Steamboat Willy, which premiered on November 18, 1928, at the Colony Theater in New York city. And so, November 18 became Mickey’s birthday.

I only found this out today because from time to time I like write emails on the topic of, “On today’s date.”

But actually Mickey’s birthday fits perfectly to something I’ve been meaning to write about for a while. That being:

Lots of businesses run promos around big and generic holidays — Black Friday, Valentine’s, Labor Day.

Some businesses try to get cute with it, and run promos for small but generic holidays — Mickey Mouse’s birthday is an example.

I guess that’s fine, if you are Ford Motors or the local gym chain.

But if you have anything like a personal brand, or want to build personal authority and a personal relationship with your list, then in my mind it’s much better, more convincing, and more effective long-term to run promos that tie into you, your business, or your customers.

The occasion for such personal promos doesn’t have to be huge (“I’m getting married!”) or cataclysmic (“I’m getting divorced!”).

It can be modest and frankly trivial — my “Most Vivian Event” from a couple months ago comes to mind, where I decided (and failed) to run a promo in honor of a reader who wouldn’t buy from me.

As long as you think up a personal occasion and reason to your promo, it builds a connection to your audience while selling at the same time… it makes your promo unique to you and uncopyable by others… and it feels more credible and real than “because Black Friday” or “because Steamboat Willy!”

I’m in the middle of launching my Daily Email Habit service. Of course, it’s turned out to be more work than I had anticipated just to put it in front of the first few people. Once I solve all the issues still facing me, I plan to promote this offer through the rest of this month.

But now that I’ve already written this Mickey Mouse email about Mickey Mouse promos, it feels like a shame not to run a promo myself, my Mickey Mouse reasons notwithstanding.

“What just happened?”

I woke up last night at 2:30am in what felt like a fever.

​​My forehead was wet and my body was burning. “Why is it so hot…” I mumbled as I threw the covers off me.

Turns out I didn’t have a fever. But my A/C did die.

Some time after I’d gone to bed (11pm, nice and cool), the A/C stopped doing its job. Immediately, the Barcelona heat, along with my nighttime panting, brought the temperature in my bedroom up to about 990 degrees.

I promise to get to the marketing moral of this email very soon. But before I get there, I have to share one more personal detail:

I’m kind of done with traveling. The packing, discomfort, displacement — I’m getting more and more resistant to it. I can’t be bothered to take even a half-hour trip out of town.

And yet:

Last night, around 4:30am, as I sat wide awake in my sauna of an apartment, in a mild panic that this is how my life will be until the A/C gets fixed (and who knows when that will be — last year it took two weeks), I started fantasizing about traveling.

Somewhere… anywhere, as long as it was cool, or at least had A/C.

And that’s the marketing moral I promised you. Imagine if in that moment, or really even now, because it’s still very hot, I had come across an ad that said:

… had I seen this ad, I can tell you, I would have called. In fact, I might even go to the trouble of researching such a hotel and calling it now, even without the ad.

The bigger point:

Nothing ever gets done without a deadline, right?

Right.

That’s why marketers have invented a million tricks and tactics for amping up the fear of missing out — countdown timers, 10+ emails on the final day of promos, disappearing bonuses, etc.

All that stuff’s necessary when you’re trying to motivate people who are not internally motivated at that moment.

But there are people who are internally motivated at that moment. And the way you find them is by asking yourself, or better yet, by asking your buyers,

“What just happened? Why did you buy, now?”

Often, it won’t have anything to do with your specific offer (continental breakfast, stylish wood paneling, friendly staff).

Instead, it will have to do with your buyers, and their life circumstances. The A/C that died in their apartment the night before, and the three hours of sleep they got as a result.

Useful info. Because once you know it, you can use it to pick these people out easily from among a huge crowd… to make them a premium offer… and to do them a huge service.

That’s my free advice for today.

I know what you did last night

Well, I can take a guess. It’s not like I have a little camera in your kitchen or anything like that.

​​Also, I don’t know everything you did last night, nor do I want to. But I can take a good guess about at least one thing you did last night.

​​I’m guessing it’s one of the following:

1. You checked the latest Wimbledon results, or

2. You nodded with approval at the news that the far-right party in France lost at the elections, or

3. You read up on the U.S. election, maybe even going so far as to investigate what exactly “Project 2025” is.

So?

Did I guess right?

Did you do any of those things last night?

If you did, you may now marvel at the amazing clairvoyant powers of Cavaliere Bejako.

And if you didn’t do any of those three things last night, well, you really should have. At least one. At least statistically speaking.

A few days ago, I made a list of 10 ways to get an idea of what people are thinking about and interested in, right now.

And this morning, I cross-referenced some of these sources of information. Those three things above were the top three things I saw in my CIA-like sleuthing.

I did this research because I’ve been re-reading the Robert Collier Letter Book, which I have come to believe is the most valuable copywriting book ever published.

For example, after reprinting a sales letter that had helped sell 250,000 copies of an 820-page history book (!) by mail (!) in 1923, Collier says the following:

The point would seem to be that if you can tie in with what people are thinking about and interested in, you can sell anything. And the particular form that your letter takes is far less important than the chord it happens to strike.

So there you go. Figure out what people are thinking about and interested in, and you can sell almost anything.

Of course, what people are thinking about doesn’t have to be of general interest — something that will show up on Google Trends.

​​Your particular audience might have a unique and specific obsession right now that only a small number of other people share.

But the point is the same. If you can figure out what that obsession is, and if you can tie your sales message into that, then…

Live, rushed, potentially typo-riddled, but fresh email from London

Last day of The Copywriter Club live event in London.

This morning, I decided to skip the 7am writing of this email. Instead, I walked the streets and parks of London till it was time for the event to start.

Then a full day of presentations, workshops, lunch, and a live podcast episode followed.

Event concluded, everyone still standing joined for a farewell Hop On Hop Off bus tour of the Westminster City and the City of London.

The bus came to Trafalgar Square and it was time for a group photo.

Linda Perry, TCC’s mindset coach, turned around in her seat towards me. “Were you even in the picture?” she asked. “Are you hiding back here?”

Rob Marsh, co-founder of TCC, also turned around. “John’s taking notes,” he said. “This will probably be in an email next week.”

Which brings me to a reply I got from a long-time reader in response to my rushed email yesterday:

I’m curious if you ever write your emails in advance? I find it’s much easier to batch content. That way I can get into a creative zone and work faster, and also not have to think about making more content for a while.

Seems like it could make your life much easier during big events like The Copywriter Club? What am I missing?

I think it’s smart to write a bunch of emails instead of one — if you’re a copywriter working for a client.

But I don’t do it for my own emails for two reasons.

First, I like the tiny bit of excitement and danger involved in finding the time to write an email each day and a fresh, current occasion or idea to write it around.

(I’m writing this at the London Bridge train station, waiting for the train to take me to Gatwick airport, which will hopefully result in me getting back to my own bed in Barcelona later tonight.)

The second reason I don’t write my emails ahead of time is more practical, and certainly more relevant to you, at least if you are interested in having your own email newsletter:

One big reason people read email newsletters is for that feeling of freshness, immediacy, novelty.

I know I quickly lose interests whenever I realize I’m reading an autoresponder email, however clever and useful it might be (I’d rather just read a book).

My prediction:

The value of rushed, typo-riddled, and yet fresh emails will only increase in a world where you no longer need to batch or schedule your emails ahead of time, or even put then into an autoresponder, because an email or 20 can be generated on the spot by glossy, generic Claude or ChatGPT.

The fact is, much of the value I provide with this newsletter is that I’m here every day, and that I happen to be human.

Just something to consider:

There are certainly days when you might not be able to write a new email. There might also be days when even if you do write a new email, it’s not obvious to your readers that it’s really new.

But if you:

​​1) make an ongoing effort to do write a new email every day and

​​2) make an effort let your audience know it’s new… then this will give people a strong added reason to read your new email tomorrow as well, beyond any fun stories or insightful takeaways you might share.

Time for me to travel. So one final point.

About that time Israeli jets bombed a US Navy ship

“We’re under attack, send help!” is probably what Captain William L. McGonagle yelled over the radio.

McGonagle commanded the Navy spy ship USS Liberty, stationed in the Mediterranean sea, in international waters off the coast of Egypt.

Four Israeli jets had just fired rockets and dropped napalm bombs on the Liberty.

In that initial attack, nine US navy men died. 60 were wounded, McGonagle among them.

Then Israel dispatched a second attack, made up of high-speed torpedo boats.

These boats fired torpedoes on the Liberty, and strafed the lifeboats that the Liberty had launched.

McGonagle succeeded in evading all but one of the torpedoes, which damaged the Liberty heavily. He also finally made contact with the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga.

The Saratoga dispatched 12 US jets to defend the Liberty. But when word of this reached Washington, US Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered the jets to retreat. It was never made clear why.

All in all, in the combined air and torpedo-boat Israeli attacks, which lasted for two hours, 34 Americans servicemen died and 171 were wounded.

Shocking, right? I’d never heard about this incident until today. I found it surprising and new. I thought you might find it surprising and new as well.

The truth is, today I had no ideas for a story to open up this email with.

I also had no valuable takeaway to give you.

I didn’t even know what offer to make.

So really I had nothing, zero, in all three main dimensions of your standard copywriter’s daily email.

The good news is I figured out a takeaway eventually.

Takeaway: You gotta have an occasion for your copy. In other words, your sales copy has to answer the question, why now?

I first heard this idea from A-list copywriter Dan Ferrari. An occasion is standard in financial copy. But it’s a very powerful idea that works in other markets just as well.

For example, Dan once wrote a sales letter in the health space that tripled response over the control. In large part, he did it by using an occasion to frame the promotion.

So that’s the valuable takeaway today, have an occasion.

What about the offer? I also figured that out:

So that takes care of the marketing takeaway and the offer.

And clearly, I also figured out a surprising story to open up with.

I did that by reading a bit about what happened on today’s date in history. Because the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty happened on today’s date, June 8th, exactly 55 years ago. That’s why I’m telling you this story today.

This “on today’s date” is not something that will work as an occasion for a long-running sales letter. But it’s a good fallback for daily emails like this one.

So let me wrap up this email and the story of the Liberty:

Israel apologized later, paid a $6.5 million restitution, and said it had mistaken the Liberty for an Egyptian warship.

But many American officials and military personnel, including those who served on the Liberty, believe the Israeli attack was intentional.

One theory is that the Liberty was attacked because it was a spy ship. It would have intercepted and discovered Israel’s secret plans for the controversial invasion of the Golan Heights, which happened the next day, on June 9th.

I might use the occasion of that Golan Heights invasion to write another email tomorrow.

My second brush with death

A few days ago, I sent out an email about a girl who secretly reminded me of a bear — in all the best ways. After I sent that email out, I posted it to my site as a blog post… and then I got the following message:

“A bear huh wtf!”

It turns out that every few months, this girl checks on me via my blog. And thanks to famous female intuition, she picked just the right day, with just the bear story right at the top.

As soon as I saw her message, I spun around and looked at my front door. A thin, half-inch board of plywood.

A cold sweat ran down my back. I imagined her showing up at my door at any moment… and with one mighty swipe, tearing it off its hinges and— well, I should be careful what I say. She might be reading.

So let me switch gear:

Yesterday, I wrote about my more real recent brush with death — a car that fell out of the sky in front of me.

When I wrote that email, I hadn’t yet thought of any clear marketing takeaway for you.

Well, I’ve since thought of an obvious and powerful takeaway. And since it goes just as well with the topic of today’s email, I’ll share this idea with you now.

This marketing idea was a revelation to me when I first heard it. That’s why I even included it as Commandment IV in my 10 Commandments of A-List Copywriters.

The commandment is simply to give an occasion to your promotion. Give the reader an excuse to buy by answering the question, “Why am I hearing about this now?”

Of course, crap, transparently false occasions won’t do much and can even hurt you. (“Oh no! We’ve overstocked our warehouse again! Tee hee, so naughty we are! Oh well, time for a sale…”)

But if you can make your occasion feel real — cars falling out of the sky, a furious girl on a rampage — then you might have yourself a sales multiplier.

That’s one reason why I think Daniel Throssell’s Black Friday campaign this year did so well.

His feud with Matt Bockenstette gave it an occasion and made it feel real. People are starved for things that feel real, and so this feud made people pay attention and maybe gave them an excuse to buy.

And that’s the key point. Maybe, an excuse to buy.

Because I’ve seen so many successful and competent marketers lately… gnashing their online teeth and shaking their online jowls. “That Throssell character! And his shameless controversy seeking! Rrrr… rrreprehensible!”

I don’t know what this reaction is about.

It could be some honor among thieves thing. “Of course we want to agitate the shit out of our prospects — it’s ultimately good for them. But come on, not when we’re the prospects!”

Or perhaps it’s just shortsightedness. Thinking that Daniel somehow cheated his way to a big win.

I don’t doubt the occasion of the feud helped. But it would have multiplied a big fat zero had Daniel not had by far the best offer… and a relationship with his audience that’s tighter than anything I’ve personally ever seen.

And if you’re wondering what my stake is in all this:

Daniel’s been generous to me and we are on good terms. But perhaps you can believe me when I say I’m not shilling for him.

In part, because he doesn’t need me to.

In part, because I have my own offers to promote.

Well, that’s not really true. All I have is one single, tiny offer.
